Stage 1 & Stage 2
What Does a Stage 1 Remap Actually Do?
By STX Tuning · 21 October 2026
The short answer
A Stage 1 remap changes the calibration inside your engine control unit (ECU) so a supported engine can deliver more usable torque and power on its standard hardware. No parts are added. The engine, turbo, intercooler and exhaust stay as the factory fitted them.
What the ECU controls
The ECU decides how much fuel is injected, when ignition happens on a petrol engine, how much boost the turbo produces and how torque is limited in each gear. Manufacturers leave margin in these settings to cover different markets, fuel quality and emissions targets. A Stage 1 calibration adjusts supported values within that margin.
Usable torque, not just a peak figure
Most drivers notice a Stage 1 remap in the mid range: overtaking, joining a motorway or pulling a load. The peak power figure matters less than how quickly the engine responds between around 2,000 and 4,500 rpm.
Factory figures and tuned estimates
Every figure we publish is an estimate for that engine variant on standard hardware. Your result depends on engine condition, fuel, ambient temperature, service history and how the car is measured. A rolling road reading is not the same as a manufacturer brochure figure.
Is Stage 1 suitable for my car?
Stage 1 generally suits a healthy, well maintained turbocharged engine with no existing faults. We check the exact engine, ECU type and software before booking. Some ECUs need unlocking first, which can affect whether the work is done at home or at our Slough workshop.
Risks and expectations
A remap asks more of the clutch, gearbox and cooling than standard settings. A slipping clutch or overdue service should be fixed first. A good calibration keeps sensible safety limits in place, but no tune can promise a specific horsepower figure.
Price and appointments
Stage 1 prices depend on the exact engine and ECU, so we confirm your price before booking. You can search your car in the shop, read about Stage 1 remapping or compare it with Stage 2. Appointments are available at the Slough workshop or, for suitable vehicles, through mobile remapping.
