ECU remapping changes the engine calibration rather than replacing mechanical components. On supported engines it coordinates torque requests, fuelling and boost; petrol setups also need an appropriate ignition and fuel strategy. Stage 1 normally retains standard performance hardware. Engine version, condition and control software determine suitability. Neither a power increase nor a fuel saving should be assumed from the badge alone.
The exact Stage 1 price at STX Tuning depends on your vehicle: some ECUs are straightforward to read and write through the diagnostic port, while others need the ECU removed, opened or unlocked first, which adds labour. Your quote is confirmed before any work begins and is the price you pay. Call 01753 439130 or use the quote form with your registration and we will confirm the exact figure for your car, whether you visit the Slough workshop or book a mobile appointment within our coverage area.
Each vehicle has its own price on its page. Newer vehicles with locked ECUs, some premium models and vehicles needing bench work can cost more because of the extra time involved. The honest answer is: send us your registration or use the vehicle finder, and we will tell you the exact price before you book. You will never be quoted one figure and charged another on the day.
Stage 1 normally uses standard performance hardware. Stage 2 is calibrated for a defined modified setup; there is no universal industry-wide parts list. Cooling, intake, exhaust or fuelling upgrades depend on the engine and target. Stage 2 ECU software is quoted separately. Any required hardware, parts and installation are priced individually.
You need the hardware specified for the chosen calibration. Not every engine requires the same downpipe, intercooler and intake combination. We distinguish required parts from recommended upgrades and assess existing modifications first. Software, required parts and installation are separate quotations, and fitting is normally a workshop arrangement.
The difference depends on the engine and chosen calibration. The most noticeable change is mid-range torque: the car pulls harder from lower revs, needs fewer gearchanges and overtakes with less effort. Throttle response sharpens and, on turbocharged engines, the surge of boost arrives stronger and earlier. Supported turbo diesel and petrol engines often offer more scope than naturally aspirated engines, but the exact configuration and condition determine expectations. Naturally aspirated engines gain less because there is no turbo to work with, and we will tell you honestly if your car falls into that category before you spend anything.
It may suit efficient driving, but there is no guaranteed MPG saving. Journey type, cold starts, load, maintenance, tyre pressure, speed and use of the additional performance all affect consumption. Compare several full-tank cycles under similar conditions rather than a dashboard MPG reading alone. Tell us how the vehicle is used before choosing economy tuning.
On many vehicles, yes. We offer gearbox (TCU) tuning for DSG and S Tronic units, ZF automatics including xHP calibrations, and several other families where support is confirmed. A gearbox tune can raise torque limiters so the box accepts the engine's new output, quicken shifts, adjust launch behaviour and improve driveability. Support varies by model and gearbox generation, so we always confirm compatibility against your exact vehicle before quoting. If your gearbox is not supported we will say so rather than guess.
Suitable programming appointments are available within 50 miles of Slough for suitable vehicles. We check the working postcode, vehicle, ECU access and safe permitted parking space before booking. Some ECU removal and unlocking procedures, hardware fitting and complex projects need workshop arrangements. Being inside the radius does not mean every service can be completed mobile.
Our mobile service covers Slough and the surrounding area up to about 50 miles, taking in towns such as Windsor, Maidenhead, Reading, High Wycombe, Uxbridge, Bracknell, Woking, Guildford, Watford and West London. Send your postcode with your enquiry and we will confirm whether a mobile visit is available for your address and, if anything changes the travel cost, tell you before you book. If you are outside the mobile area you are still welcome at the Slough workshop, and for larger jobs we can sometimes arrange coverage further afield by agreement.
A straightforward supported remap often takes around one to two hours including checks, but ECU access, unlocks and diagnostic findings can extend the appointment. Hardware projects need separate planning. We confirm the expected duration for the agreed work rather than promising the same time for every car.
Recovery depends on the ECU, supported read method and the software and hardware fitted to the vehicle. Some tools use a virtual read rather than a complete original read. Later manufacturer updates or modifications can affect restoration. Discuss the backup and recovery approach before programming; we do not guarantee a factory restore in every situation.
Many newer vehicles, particularly recent BMW, Mercedes-Benz and VAG models, ship with locked ECUs that refuse tuning through the diagnostic port. These need an unlock first: sometimes a software patch, sometimes a bench procedure with the ECU removed. It adds time and cost, and we will identify whether your ECU is locked before quoting so there are no surprises. Not every vehicle needs this, and we never claim all do. If yours does, we explain exactly what is involved and let you decide before any work begins.
Eligible work carries a lifetime software warranty. Ask which cover applies to the exact service in your quotation and read the warranty section of our terms before booking. Do not assume every specialist service, hardware part or mechanical component is covered. Later software updates or modifications may require reassessment.
We run a diagnostic check before tuning every vehicle. If that check shows existing faults, such as a failing sensor, boost leak or stored fault codes, the right sequence is to fix the underlying problem first. Remapping a faulty engine masks symptoms and can turn a small issue into an expensive one. We will show you what the diagnostics found, explain what needs attention and, where it is something we can help with, quote for it separately. Once the car is healthy, the remap goes ahead as normal.

Had my car stage 1 remapped with pops and bangs, outcome was wicked! Would definitely recommend
Contacted these guys and they came out within 2 days fixed the car and now all is perfect again really happy with the remap done on my car too very polite, efficient service and would highly recommended
I wanted to leave a genuine review, I got my car remapped on the 5th June 2026. Making the appointment was very easy, I didn’t have to wait too long for an appointment and had the option for someone to come to my house if needed. The remap was done within an hour or so.
My light did come back on a week after the remap was done, but I was able to clear it with no issues and last weekend I took a 4 hour round trip to the beach and the light did not come back on when usually it does after about 1hr into a drive.
The point of my long review is I highly recommend this company and I am very happy with the service provided.
First time tuning my car. Didn’t know what to expect but it was amazing. They explained everything to me clearly, how it works etc and before you know it my car was ready. 10/10 polite service. Will be coming back in the future with serious motors, can tell these guys are professionals judging by tons of performance cars outside.
Really five star service I’ve only got my car the day before I messaged on a Sunday just as an inquiry was more than Happy to take time of the day on a Sunday to fit me in last minute just want to think the whole team very professional and I absolutely love my car. I felt an instant power boost and explained everything to me and packages that I can definitely most likely in the future upgrade to will be definitely coming again.
