Understanding Stage 2

What is Stage 2 ECU remapping?

Stage 2 remapping is a form of ECU tuning designed around a vehicle's supporting hardware setup.

Where Stage 1 is generally intended for compatible standard-hardware vehicles, Stage 2 takes into account additional components that may change how the engine breathes, manages temperature or delivers performance.

Depending on the engine, these components could include an upgraded intake, intercooler, exhaust-related hardware or other supporting parts.

The ECU calibration must be appropriate for the engine and the components actually fitted.

A Stage 2 remap isn't simply a more aggressive Stage 1 file, and the right specification varies considerably between vehicles.

Some engines have well-established Stage 2 upgrade routes. Others may need further checks, different components or may not have a suitable Stage 2 option at all.

A Stage 2 build starts with the right combination.

Before quoting for Stage 2, it's important to understand the vehicle, the supporting components and the ECU software required.

  1. 1

    Part 1 — The vehicle

    Start with the engine

Engine type, ECU support, gearbox, mechanical condition and existing modifications all affect the tuning options available.

A Stage 2 setup that works on one engine may be completely unsuitable for another.

  2. 2

    Part 2 — The hardware

    Choose the right upgrades

Supporting components may be recommended to improve airflow, charge-air cooling or another part of the engine setup.

The correct parts must be chosen for the specific vehicle rather than from a generic Stage 2 shopping list.

  3. 3

    Part 3 — The calibration

Match the software to the setup

The ECU calibration must suit the hardware fitted and the engine's operating requirements.

The aim is a properly considered tuning setup, not simply the highest possible headline figure.

Engine + hardware + calibration — working together.

What upgrades might your Stage 2 remap need?

Stage 2 hardware requirements are different from one engine to another.

Some vehicles benefit from improved cooling or intake components. Others may need additional supporting parts before a suitable calibration can be considered.

STX Tuning can help you review the options for your particular engine.

Performance air intakes

An upgraded intake can change the airflow characteristics of a compatible engine and may form part of a planned performance build.

The benefit depends on the original intake design, the replacement component and the overall setup.

An intake isn't automatically required for every Stage 2 remap.

Performance intercoolers

Turbocharged engines heat the air as it is compressed. An intercooler helps manage intake-air temperature.

A suitable intercooler upgrade can support charge-air cooling under demanding conditions, but the need for one depends on the engine, original cooling system and intended performance level.

Performance exhaust & downpipe options

Exhaust components can influence airflow, sound and the suitability of a performance setup.

Requirements vary by engine and exhaust configuration.

Any proposed hardware must be checked for compatibility and applicable road-use requirements. Removing or disabling required emissions-control equipment is not a standard Stage 2 requirement.

Turbo & hybrid turbo upgrades

Some customers considering higher performance may also be interested in turbocharger upgrades.

These are more involved modifications and may require additional hardware, calibration and drivetrain considerations.

Not every turbo upgrade belongs in a conventional Stage 2 package.

Gearbox & TCU tuning

On compatible automatic vehicles, gearbox software can be a relevant consideration when engine torque is increased.

The gearbox type and existing software determine which options are available.

Gearbox tuning is a separate service and should not be assumed to be included in a Stage 2 quotation.

Is Stage 2 worth it over Stage 1?

Stage 2 isn't automatically better for every driver.

The right decision depends on how much performance you want, which components your car already has and how much additional work you're prepared to undertake.

Stage 1 — a strong starting point

  • Designed for compatible standard-hardware engines.
  • Generally fewer supporting modifications.
  • Vehicle-specific ECU calibration.
  • Power and torque gains where supported.
  • Often the simpler performance upgrade route.
View Stage 1 remapping

Stage 2 — a more developed setup

  • Calibration planned around supporting hardware.
  • Additional parts may be required.
  • More detailed compatibility considerations.
  • Potential further gains on supported engines.
  • More involved preparation and quotation.

Some customers will get everything they want from Stage 1. Others may already have suitable performance parts fitted or want to build towards a Stage 2 setup.

STX Tuning can help you review the available options before you commit.

Is your vehicle suitable for Stage 2?

Before arranging a more involved tuning setup, it's worth checking the condition of the vehicle and any modifications already fitted.

A car with unresolved mechanical faults or unsuitable hardware may need attention before additional performance is considered.

  • Engine conditionExisting faults, maintenance condition and engine behaviour should be considered before tuning.
  • ECU compatibilityAvailable software procedures and ECU support vary by vehicle.
  • Supporting hardwareRequired or recommended components must be compatible with the engine and intended setup.
  • Gearbox & drivetrainAvailable torque increases should be considered alongside gearbox, clutch and drivetrain limits.
  • Fuel & operating conditionsSome calibrations may require a suitable fuel grade or other operating conditions.
  • Intended vehicle useProposed modifications must be appropriate for the vehicle's intended use and applicable requirements.

How much does a Stage 2 remap cost?

Stage 2 pricing depends on the vehicle, ECU software, supporting hardware and installation work required.

Some cars may already have suitable components fitted, while others may need additional parts before the correct calibration can be considered.

That's why we don't believe in advertising one price for every Stage 2 setup.

STX Tuning can review your engine, the modifications already fitted and the performance you're looking for before putting together a quotation.

How we plan your Stage 2 remap

A proper Stage 2 enquiry starts with understanding the car, not simply selecting a software stage.

Here's how we help you work towards the right setup.

  1. 01

    Tell us about your car

Start with your registration, make, model, engine and any modifications already fitted.

Let us know what performance you're looking for and whether you're considering additional hardware.

  2. 02

    Review compatibility

We'll review the available software options and any known hardware requirements for the vehicle.

Where further information or inspection is needed, we'll explain that before confirming the work.

  3. 03

    Build your quotation

We'll outline the proposed software work and any relevant supporting upgrades.

Hardware, fitting and other services should be quoted clearly rather than assumed to be included.

  4. 04

    Arrange your workshop appointment

Once the scope of work is agreed, we'll confirm the appropriate appointment arrangements.

Hardware-inclusive Stage 2 builds are generally planned around suitable workshop facilities.

  5. 05

    Complete the agreed work

The approved components and ECU software work are carried out as appropriate to the vehicle.

Relevant checks and any important findings should be explained before handover.
