Which performance intake is right for you?

Different air intake systems offer different designs, sounds and installation requirements.

Some drivers prefer a more noticeable induction sound, while others want a more enclosed setup or a simple replacement filter.

The right choice depends on the vehicle and what you're trying to achieve.

Open-cone induction kits

For drivers interested in a more noticeable induction sound.

Open-cone intake systems use an exposed performance filter rather than a fully enclosed factory-style airbox.

Depending on the engine and installation, they may make induction and turbo-related sounds more noticeable.

Their effect on intake-air temperature and airflow depends on the product design, heat shielding and engine-bay conditions.

A louder induction system does not automatically produce more power.

Induction sound
Sound characteristics vary between engines and installations.
Exposed filter design
Filter placement and heat shielding matter.
Fitment check required
Choose a kit designed for the actual vehicle.

Enclosed performance intakes

A more integrated air intake design.

Enclosed performance intake systems use a housing or shielded design around the filter.

Depending on the product, the system may use dedicated ducting or a shaped enclosure to manage how intake air is supplied.

Different enclosed kits vary in construction, sound and fitment.

The right option depends on the engine, available installation space and intended setup.

Enclosed design
Housing and ducting vary by product.
Product-specific sound
Some systems remain relatively discreet; others make induction noise more noticeable.
Vehicle-specific installation
Fitment must be confirmed.

Performance panel air filters

An alternative filter for a compatible factory airbox.

A performance panel filter replaces the filter element inside a compatible existing airbox.

It can be an option for drivers who prefer to retain the factory intake housing rather than install a complete induction kit.

Filter construction, maintenance and suitability depend on the product.

A replacement panel filter should not be advertised as delivering a guaranteed horsepower increase.

Retains the airbox
Uses the existing compatible intake housing.
Product-specific maintenance
Cleaning and replacement requirements vary.
Exact filter fitment
Correct dimensions and specification matter.

Turbo inlets & performance intake pipes

Supporting airflow components for compatible turbo engines.

Turbo inlet pipes, elbows and other intake components can form part of a more involved performance setup.

These components connect different parts of the induction system, and their design can affect the intake arrangement.

Whether an upgraded component offers a worthwhile benefit depends on the engine, original hardware and complete setup.

Fitment and any supporting parts must be checked before ordering.

Turbocharged applications
Available options depend on the engine and turbocharger.
Supporting components
May be considered with other compatible intake hardware.
Compatibility
Connections, sensors and installation requirements matter.

The sound of an intake upgrade

Want to hear more of your engine?

For some drivers, induction sound is one of the main reasons to change the air intake.

Depending on the engine and the type of intake fitted, you may hear more air movement or turbo-related sounds during acceleration.

An open-cone system may sound different from a fully enclosed kit, but there is no single sound that applies to every vehicle.

The engine, turbocharger, intake design and installation all influence the result.

If sound is your main priority, tell us when requesting a quote so we can check suitable options.

  • Induction sound

Air movement through the intake can become more noticeable on some setups.

  • Turbo-related sound

On certain turbocharged engines, intake changes may alter how noticeable turbo sounds are.

  • Factory-like character

Some drivers prefer a quieter, more integrated intake design.

How much power can a performance intake add?

An intake upgrade may change the way air reaches the engine, but the result isn't the same for every car.

Some engines have more restrictive original intake arrangements than others.

The outcome depends on the replacement kit, filter, ducting, intake temperatures and overall engine setup.

A performance intake fitted to a standard car may offer a different result from the same type of component used as part of a properly planned higher-performance build.

That's why STX Tuning does not advertise one universal horsepower increase for induction kits.

If you're looking for a specific performance result, we'll need to consider the exact engine, product and supporting modifications.

Intake hardware is not the same as an ECU remap.

A vehicle's Stage 1 or Stage 2 tuning figures should not automatically be attributed to an intake upgrade.

Explore the right intake brand for your car.

Performance intake manufacturers offer different products, materials, designs and vehicle applications.

The correct choice depends on your engine, fitment requirements, budget and preferred intake characteristics.

STX Tuning can help you check the products actually available for your car before confirming a quotation.

Ask about brands on WhatsApp

Do you need ECU remapping with an induction kit?

Not every induction kit requires a separate ECU remap.

Some suitable intake systems may be fitted to otherwise standard vehicles, while other hardware changes need further consideration.

The correct approach depends on the engine, sensors, hardware design and existing calibration.

Intake + Stage 1

Some compatible vehicles may have an intake upgrade fitted alongside Stage 1 ECU software.

The intake must suit the engine, and the calibration must remain appropriate for the installed hardware.

Explore Stage 1 remapping

Intake + Stage 2

An intake system may be one of the supporting components considered for a Stage 2 build.

The requirements depend on the engine and the proposed calibration.

Not every Stage 2 setup needs the same intake hardware.

Fitting only

Already bought your induction kit?

Send us the manufacturer, part number and your vehicle registration. We'll review the product and fitting requirements before confirming whether we can accept the installation.

Fitting customer-supplied parts is subject to acceptance and compatibility.

Why the right fitment matters.

An air intake upgrade needs to suit the actual engine and vehicle layout.

The filter, pipework, mounting points and sensor arrangements all need to be compatible. A kit that fits one version of a model may not fit another.

Correct installation matters too, particularly where the system uses specific seals, clamps, brackets or sensors.

STX Tuning can help check the proposed component and the work required before agreeing to an installation.

Engine & generation
Different engine versions can have different intake arrangements.
Sensors & connections
Relevant sensors and intake connections must be accommodated correctly.
Filter location
Placement, heat shielding and water exposure should be considered where relevant.
Maintenance
Filters may have different cleaning and replacement requirements depending on the manufacturer.

I wanted to leave a genuine review, I got my car remapped on the 5th June 2026. Making the appointment was very easy, I didn’t have to wait too long for an appointment and had the option for someone to come to my house if needed. The remap was done within an hour or so. My light did come back on a week after the remap was done, but I was able to clear it with no issues and last weekend I took a 4 hour round trip to the beach and the light did not come back on when usually it does after about 1hr into a drive. The point of my long review is I highly recommend this company and I am very happy with the service provided.

Will be coming back in the future with serious motors, can tell these guys are professionals judging by tons of performance cars outside.
