Which turbo upgrade are you considering?

Not every turbo upgrade involves replacing the factory setup with a much larger turbocharger.

Different options may suit different engines and performance goals.

Choose the type of build you're interested in and we'll help check what's available for your vehicle.

Hybrid turbo upgrade

More involved performance hardware with a factory-based design.

A hybrid turbocharger is generally an upgraded turbo assembly based on an existing turbo design or housing arrangement.

Depending on the product, the internal compressor, turbine or other components may differ from the original specification.

The exact design and installation requirements vary by engine and manufacturer.

Direct-fit performance turbo

A vehicle-specific replacement where available.

Some aftermarket turbochargers are designed to use existing mounting locations and relevant connections on supported engines.

Direct-fit does not automatically mean that no additional parts or calibration changes are required.

Big turbo conversions

A more involved performance build.

A larger aftermarket turbocharger may form part of a higher-output engine project.

These conversions can require different manifolds, intake connections, oil and coolant arrangements, exhaust hardware, supporting components and ECU calibration.

The correct setup depends on the engine and intended performance.

Twin-turbo & custom turbo builds

For more individual engine requirements.

Some engines use more than one turbocharger, while certain projects involve more extensive changes to the original arrangement.

The available options and scope of work require an individual engine and hardware assessment.

What is a hybrid turbocharger?

A hybrid turbo is an upgraded turbocharger that uses parts of an existing design or housing arrangement with modified or different internal components.

Depending on the product, a hybrid may include changes to the compressor wheel, turbine wheel, bearing assembly or housing geometry.

Different manufacturers use different approaches, so there is no single specification that defines every hybrid turbo.

On some engines, a hybrid is designed to retain a relatively familiar installation arrangement while offering different airflow characteristics.

That doesn't make every hybrid a direct replacement requiring no additional work.

The correct turbo, supporting hardware and ECU software must be considered together.

Not every hybrid turbo is the same.

Turbocharger specification and engine suitability matter more than the label alone.

Compressor wheel
The compressor wheel is part of the turbocharger that compresses incoming air.
Turbine wheel
The turbine wheel is driven by exhaust gas energy.
CHRA / core
The centre housing rotating assembly contains key rotating and bearing components.
Housings
Compressor and turbine housings influence the turbocharger's installation and operating characteristics.

Hybrid turbo or big turbo — which suits your build?

The right turbocharger depends on what you want the car to do.

A responsive road-car setup can have different requirements from a more specialised high-output engine project.

Hybrid turbo

An upgrade based around a particular turbo design.

Depending on the product, a hybrid turbo may retain certain original mounting or housing characteristics while using upgraded internals.

This can make it an option worth exploring on selected engines where a suitable product exists.

Big turbo

A more extensive aftermarket turbo system.

A big turbo setup may involve a different turbocharger size and a wider range of supporting hardware changes.

It is often a more individual project where response, overall power goals and installation packaging need careful consideration.

The best turbo is the one that suits the engine and how you want to drive it.

How does a turbocharger produce boost?

A turbocharger uses energy from exhaust gases to drive a turbine wheel.

That turbine is connected by a shaft to a compressor wheel, which compresses incoming air.

On many turbocharged engines, the compressed air then passes through a charge-air cooling system before reaching the engine.

The turbocharger's operating characteristics depend on its design, the engine and the overall control system.

Upgrading the turbocharger changes one part of that complete setup.

  1. Exhaust gas

    Drives the turbine.

  2. Turbine wheel

Extracts energy from the exhaust flow.

  3. Compressor wheel

    Compresses incoming air.

  4. Charge-air cooling

Helps manage intake temperatures on relevant systems.

  5. Engine ECU

    Manages supported engine operating controls.

What do you want from your turbo upgrade?

Two customers with the same engine might want very different results.

One may want stronger everyday acceleration and responsive performance.

Another may be planning a more specialised high-output build.

The right turbocharger and supporting hardware depend on those goals.

What fuel do you plan to use?

How will you use the car?

Custom turbo performance — to be confirmed. Stage 1 and Stage 2 figures do not apply to a turbo upgrade.

10 turbocharger names to explore for your performance build.

Different turbocharger manufacturers and specialists develop products for different engines, performance goals and applications.

Some focus on direct replacement and hybrid upgrades, while others offer motorsport or more specialised turbo hardware.

STX Tuning can help you enquire about relevant products for your exact vehicle, subject to availability and compatibility.

I wanted to leave a genuine review, I got my car remapped on the 5th June 2026. Making the appointment was very easy, I didn’t have to wait too long for an appointment and had the option for someone to come to my house if needed. The remap was done within an hour or so. My light did come back on a week after the remap was done, but I was able to clear it with no issues and last weekend I took a 4 hour round trip to the beach and the light did not come back on when usually it does after about 1hr into a drive. The point of my long review is I highly recommend this company and I am very happy with the service provided.
