Which type of exhaust are you looking for?

Performance exhaust systems are available in different configurations.

The right choice depends on the vehicle, the components being replaced, the design of the system and the intended use.

Compare the main types below before requesting a vehicle-specific quotation.

Cat-back exhaust systems

A replacement system from the catalyst outlet rearwards, where applicable.

A cat-back exhaust generally replaces sections of the exhaust system behind the catalytic-converter area.

Depending on the vehicle and product, it may include centre sections, resonators, rear silencers, connecting pipework and tailpipes.

Different cat-back systems offer different construction, appearance and sound characteristics.

The exact components included vary by manufacturer and vehicle.

System design
May include multiple exhaust sections.
Tailpipe choice
Available finishes and configurations depend on the product.
Fitment
Vehicle-specific mounting and connections matter.

Axle-back exhaust systems

A more focused rear-section upgrade.

An axle-back exhaust generally replaces part of the rear exhaust system, although the precise sections vary between vehicles.

It can be an option for customers who want to change the rear exhaust assembly rather than replace a larger portion of the system.

The sound and appearance depend on the actual product, silencer design and vehicle.

Rear-section focus
Usually involves the rear exhaust arrangement.
Component-specific
Parts included depend on the vehicle.
Installation
Existing connection points and exhaust layout must be checked.

Valved performance exhausts

Different exhaust operating modes where supported.

Some exhaust systems use valves to vary the route exhaust gases take through the system or silencers.

A valved design may produce different sound characteristics depending on the vehicle and valve configuration.

Some products work with existing vehicle controls, while others may require additional compatible hardware.

The availability and permitted operation of a valved system must be checked for the exact vehicle.

Valve configuration
Factory-controlled or aftermarket options where genuinely supported.
Compatibility
Electronics, actuators and control arrangements vary.
Approval
Suitability for intended use must be established.

Rear silencers & exhaust finishes

Change the rear exhaust assembly or appearance.

Some vehicle-specific exhaust upgrades focus on the rear silencer or the visible tailpipe arrangement.

Customers may be interested in different tip shapes, finishes or a compatible rear assembly.

The correct product depends on the existing exhaust, bumper and diffuser layout.

Rear exhaust design
System-specific silencers and components.
Tailpipe finish
Available styles vary by product.
Bodywork fitment
Rear bumper and diffuser clearance matter.

Resonated or non-resonated — what's the difference?

Exhaust manufacturers sometimes offer resonated and non-resonated versions of a system.

The difference is generally related to the use of a resonator within the exhaust design.

These configurations can change the exhaust's sound characteristics, but the actual result depends on the vehicle and product.

Neither option should be assumed suitable for road use without checking the specific system.

Resonated exhaust

A system with a resonator in the relevant design.

A resonator is used to influence particular sound frequencies within an exhaust system.

On some vehicles, a resonated design may help manage unwanted sound characteristics or cabin drone compared with another version of the same system.

The actual result depends on the exhaust construction and engine.

Non-resonated exhaust

A different sound character where available.

A non-resonated version omits the corresponding resonator from that particular exhaust configuration.

This may change the system's sound characteristics and, in some applications, make certain frequencies or cabin drone more noticeable.

The actual result varies and is not a guaranteed sound increase or approval for road use.

Which one should you choose?

Tell us whether you prefer a more discreet character or are comparing particular approved systems. STX Tuning can help check the genuine product options and suitability for your vehicle.

Exhaust control options

What is a valved exhaust?

A valved exhaust uses one or more valves within the exhaust system to change how exhaust gases flow through the available passages.

Depending on the vehicle and product, the valve position may be controlled electronically or through another supported arrangement.

Some systems are designed to work with existing vehicle controls, while other products have their own compatible control hardware.

A valved exhaust is not automatically suitable for road use in every configuration, and its design and operation must be checked before installation.

  • Factory controls

Some compatible systems work with existing vehicle valve arrangements.

  • Aftermarket control

Other products may require additional approved hardware or integration.

  • Sound & road-use requirements

Available operating modes must remain appropriate for the vehicle's intended use.

Want to hear the difference?

Exhaust sound is one of the biggest reasons customers compare different systems.

But sound depends on the engine, exhaust configuration, vehicle specification and recording conditions.

Find the right exhaust manufacturer for your car.

Different exhaust manufacturers offer different designs, finishes and vehicle applications.

Some specialise in complete stainless-steel systems, while others offer specific rear sections, valved configurations or premium materials.

The right choice depends on your vehicle, budget, preferred characteristics and product suitability.

STX Tuning can help check genuine products and available supply-and-fitting options.

The finish matters too.

An exhaust upgrade isn't always about changing the sound.

The visible tailpipes and rear-end appearance can also be important when choosing a system. Available finishes and configurations depend on the actual product and vehicle.

  • Polished stainless steel

A bright metallic finish available on selected systems.

  • Black exhaust tips

A darker finish offered on certain product variants.

  • Carbon-fibre finishes

Available on some manufacturer-specific tailpipe designs.

  • Single, dual or quad

Tailpipe number and layout must suit the vehicle's exhaust and bumper arrangement.

Bumper and diffuser compatibility must be checked. Not every tailpipe configuration fits the existing rear bumper or diffuser without additional parts or modifications.

Do performance exhausts add power?

A performance exhaust may change the way exhaust gases move through a system, but its effect on engine output depends on the vehicle and the component.

A rear exhaust replacement may have very different performance characteristics from more extensive exhaust hardware changes.

On some cars, an exhaust upgrade is primarily chosen for its design, materials or sound characteristics rather than a measurable increase in power. Other performance builds may use suitable exhaust hardware as part of a wider engine and ECU setup.

STX Tuning does not advertise a universal horsepower increase for exhaust systems. Any performance claim should be based on the actual product, vehicle and supporting evidence.

An exhaust upgrade does not automatically increase the Stage 1 or Stage 2 power figures.

Choose an exhaust that suits your car and intended use.

Performance exhaust products vary in construction, sound characteristics and approval status.

Before ordering a system, it's important to check its fitment, permitted use and relationship with the vehicle's required emissions and noise-control equipment.

  • Vehicle compatibility

Engine, model year, body style, drivetrain and existing exhaust layout can affect fitment.

  • Exhaust noise

Road-going vehicles must comply with applicable exhaust-noise requirements. An aftermarket system should not be assumed suitable simply because it is available to purchase.

  • Emissions equipment

Required catalytic converters, petrol particulate filters and other emissions-control equipment must not be removed or compromised on road-going vehicles.

  • Product approval

Any claimed approval or road-use suitability must be supported by genuine product-specific documentation and the applicable vehicle configuration.

Do you need an ECU remap with an exhaust upgrade?

Not every performance exhaust requires engine ECU software changes.

The correct approach depends on the exhaust components being replaced, the vehicle and any existing modifications.

Exhaust + Stage 1

Some compatible vehicles can have an appropriate exhaust replacement alongside Stage 1 ECU software.

The exhaust must be suitable for the vehicle, and the engine calibration must remain appropriate for the actual hardware.

Explore Stage 1 remapping

Exhaust + Stage 2

Some more involved performance setups use suitable exhaust hardware as part of a wider Stage 2 build.

The correct parts and calibration depend on the engine and intended use.

A Stage 2 remap does not automatically require removing emissions-control equipment.

STX were great! (its within ONYX which confused me when I got there, no biggy, just for anyone else reading it). I happened to be arriving when a guy must have been starting their shift, super helpful and got me to the right person. On the way in they even took the time to show my son the Lambo they had, this type of service is so nice to receive. The young guy we spotted fitting the wheels later on, thank you! In for a Stage 1 remap, all done in 30 minutes, and car drives brilliantly and exceeded expectations. Also at a great price as well. All staff I met were super nice and helpful. Credit to you guys! I will definitely be choose these guys going forward! Highly recommend.
