What Does an Upgraded Intercooler Do?
By STX Tuning · 21 October 2026
The short answer
An upgraded intercooler keeps the air entering a turbocharged engine cooler, especially during repeated or sustained hard driving. Cooler air is denser and reduces the chance of the ECU pulling power to protect the engine.
Intake temperatures
A turbo heats air as it compresses it. The intercooler removes some of that heat. Under sustained load a standard intercooler can heat soak, and intake temperatures rise.
Sustained performance
The main benefit is consistency. A car with a larger intercooler is more likely to deliver the same performance on the third hard run as on the first.
When it matters
- Stage 2 calibrations that are written around one.
- Track days and repeated hard driving.
- Hot weather.
For a standard Stage 1 car used on the road, an intercooler is often not essential.
Fitting
Fitting takes workshop time, so it is quoted with the parts. See tuning packages, Stage 2 or plan it in the Tuning Builder.
