VW DSG Gearboxes: DQ200 vs DQ250 vs DQ381
By STX Tuning · 21 October 2026
The short answer
DQ200, DQ250 and DQ381 are different Volkswagen Group dual clutch gearboxes. They differ in clutch type and the torque they are designed for, so the tuning options and sensible limits differ too.
DQ200: seven speed dry clutch
The DQ200 uses dry clutches and is fitted to many lower torque petrol models. Its design torque limit is relatively low, so it is the most sensitive of the three to added torque. Any engine remap on a DQ200 car needs to respect that.
DQ250: six speed wet clutch
The DQ250 uses oil cooled wet clutches and was fitted to many higher torque models, including earlier Golf GTI and Golf R variants. It handles more torque than the DQ200 but still has limits.
DQ381: seven speed wet clutch
The DQ381 is a later seven speed wet clutch gearbox used on newer higher torque models such as later Golf R and S3 variants. It is designed for higher torque than the DQ250.
Why it matters
The gearbox determines how much of a tuned engine's torque can be used reliably, and whether DSG software is available. We identify the gearbox from your registration before quoting.
